Sept. 21 AP & Coaches Top 25 Poll Updates

Penn State (3-0) falls to #3 in the AP Poll & remains #2 in the Coaches Poll released on Sunday following the Nittany Lions first Bye Week of the season. Ohio State is still #1 in both polls, but Miami (4-0) leapfrogged idle Penn State (and LSU) to take over at #2 in the AP following the Hurricanes 26-7 win over unranked Florida (Miami still remains outside of the Top 5 in the Coaches Poll this week at #6). Oregon (4-0, 1-0) which is the Nittany Lions opponent in the Whiteout Game on Sept. 27 at Beaver Stadium (7:30pm on NBC) remains #6 in the AP Poll and is still ranked #5 by the Coaches. All of this is a bit of a setback for PSU fans hoping for a first ever “Top 5 in both polls match-up” in the Official Whiteout, but they’ll have to settle for just a Coaches Top 5 showdown. The Ducks tumbled in the AP rankings a week ago despite winning their Big Ten opener 34-14 on the road at Northwestern. Oregon beat former PAC-12 rival Oregon State, 41-7 in Eugene Saturday.

Penn State has only faced a Top 5 team in an Official Whiteout on 3 other occasions—2011 vs. #3 Alabama (L), 2016, vs. #2 Ohio state (W) & 2018 vs. #4 Ohio State (L). This will be the fourth Official Whiteout where PSU is ranked in the Top 5, along with 2009 vs. Iowa (L), 2017 vs. Michigan (W), and 2024 vs. SMU in CFP (W). When only considering the current Coaches Poll #2 ranking, the Oregon match-up is the second Whiteout game to feature a second-ranked Nittany Lions team along with the 2017 Whiteout win over Michigan.

Indiana (4-0) which plays at PSU on Nov. 8 has moved up to #11 in the AP Poll & #12 in the Coaches Poll following a 63-10 blowout win over former #9 Illinois in Bloomington.

The FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll also saw PSU drop to #3 behind Ohio State & now #2 Georgia (despite all 3 being idle) with Oregon slipping to #6.
