PSU-OREGON GAME FLOW & SUMMARY LINK

  • Game Four of 2025 season (PSU 3-0)Coming off of Bye Week 1, this is the 33rd Big Ten Season Opener for PSU, and the 18th Official Whiteout Game. It is the first game of the season where both PSU and its FBS opponent are ranked. It is also a rematch of the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game. This is the first of three games this season pitting PSU against the three other Big Ten playoff teams from the 2024 CFP (Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana). This is the second straight season to see Penn State open its Big Ten schedule at home—this has not happened since 2008-09. Penn State is 18-14 all-time in Big Ten openers (5-5 at Beaver Stadium). James Franklin is 9-2 overall (2-0 at home) in conference season openers. Including this game, all 3 of Franklin’s Big Ten openers at Beaver Stadium have been night games (2015 win vs. Rutgers, 2024 win vs. Illinois). This is only the third Big Ten season opener to also be the “official” Whiteout Game and the first of the Franklin-era (2008 win vs. Illinois & 2009 loss vs. Iowa were the others). With a win in this game, James Franklin (104 wins) can break the tie with Rip Engle (1950-1965) for second all-time in coaching victories at PSU (Joe Paterno 409 wins is all-time PSU & FBS record). Interestingly, this is also the 409th game to be played in Beaver Stadium.

  • Last PSU Game played in 2025: Penn State 52 Villanova 6 (last week, Sept. 20, was Bye Week 1 for PSU while Oregon defeated Oregon State 41-7 to improve to 4-0—The Ducks’ Dante Moore passed for 305 yards, 4 TDs—Penn Live reported that Moore attended the 2021 WO vs. Auburn as a PSU recruit)—The Sept. 13th win over Villanova was the second 40+ point game for PSU this season along with week one 46-11 win over Nevada. Oregon opened its Big Ten season on Sept. 13 at Northwestern winning 34-14.

  • This week’s rankings: AP Poll #3 (PSU falls 1 spot following Bye Week after having been #2 since pre-season poll)—AP Top 5-Ohio State, Miami (up 2 spots), PSU, LSU, and Georgia with Oregon #6 & Indiana #11 / Coaches Poll #2 (no change from Bye week poll)—Coaches Top 5-Ohio State, PSU, Georgia, LSU and Oregon with Miami #6 & Indiana #12 / FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll also saw PSU slide to #3 behind Ohio State & Georgia with Oregon falling to #6.

  • Pre-Bye Week 1 Rankings after PSU win over Villanova: AP Poll #2—no change from prior week, Coaches Poll #2—also no change from prior weekOregon was then ranked 6th in AP Poll & 5th in Coaches Poll.

  • Whiteout Games vs. Top 5 opponents: 2025 #3/2 PSU vs. #6/5 Oregon (first to not be in AP Top 5) (L), 2018 #9 PSU vs. #4 Ohio State (L), 2016 unranked PSU vs. #2 Ohio State (W), and 2011 #23 PSU vs. #3 Alabama (L). The 2025 Whiteout vs. Oregon is also the second full stadium Whiteout to feature two AP Top 10 teams along with the 2018 game vs. Ohio State. (The 2024 CFP Whiteout vs. SMU also qualifies as a Top 10 matchup if only CFP Poll rankings are considered).

  • Whiteout Games with Penn State ranked in Top 5: 2025 #3/2 PSU vs. #6/5 Oregon (L), 2024 #4/#5 PSU vs. #10/#12 SMU in CFP (W), 2017 #2 PSU vs. #19 Michigan (W), and 2009 #5 PSU vs. unranked Iowa (L). Penn State has also been ranked in AP Top 10 in five additional regular season Whiteout games in #9 in 2018 (L), #7 in 2019 (W), #10 in 2021 (W), #7 in 2023 (W), and #6 in 2024 (W).

  • James Franklin record in games vs. Top 10 opponents (2014-present): 5-20 (last 10 games: 3-7)—9 of the 20 losses are to Ohio State, 5 are to Michigan, and 1 is to Oregon in 2024 Big Ten Championship Game (2 of the losses were to the #1 ranked team in the nation—Ohio State 2015 & Oregon 2024). The 5 wins are over Ohio State 2016, Wisconsin 2016, Utah 2023 Rose Bowl, SMU 2024 CFP, & Boise State 2024 CFP Fiesta Bowl (3 of the 5 victories were at Beaver Stadium)

  • 6th meeting with Oregon all-time (3rd ever regular season game): PSU is 3-2 vs. the Ducks overall and is 1-1 in regular season games vs. Oregon (winning on the road in 1963 at then-Multnomah Stadium in Portland, Oregon against the Webfoots “Firehouse Four” backfield featuring Mel Renfro; while losing at Beaver Stadium in 1964). This is the first of 3 scheduled regular season Big Ten games with the Ducks—with a road game coming in 2027 (PSU’s first visit to Oregon’s home Autzen Stadium in Eugene which opened in 1967) and a second home date in 2028. The other 3 games played against Oregon were post-season affairs—1960 Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia (W), 1995 Rose Bowl (W), and 2024 Big Ten Championship (L).

  • 2nd meeting ever with Oregon at Beaver Stadium: The first was in 1964 which saw PSU lose 22-14 to open that season 0-3. This is the first regular season game and first home game vs. Oregon where the Ducks are members of the Big Ten—All meetings prior to 2024 saw Oregon as an Independent (1960 & 1963) or PAC-12 (or predecessor conference) members (1964 to 2023). This is also the first game at Beaver Stadium since the 65th birthday of the facility which officially opened Sept. 17, 1960, with a 20-0 win over Boston University.

  • The last PSU-Oregon meeting in 2024: Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Dec. 7. #3 PSU (11-1) vs. undefeated #1 Oregon in the first game where the Nittany Lions faced the #1 ranked team since 2015 loss at Ohio State (PSU is 0-6 vs. #1 teams in the Big Ten era). It was also PSU’s first ever game against Oregon where both were members of the Big Ten, and it made State the first team to face all the former PAC-12 teams now in the league in the same season and as members of the Big Ten. A late rally comes up short and PSU loses 45-37, sending Oregon to the Rose Bowl/CFP Quarterfinals while sending State to the CFP playoffs 1st round as the 6th seed. Stats: Drew Allar was 20 of 39 for 226 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs. Allar rushed 5 times for a career best 54 yards and 1 TD. Allar’s TD passes went to Nick Singleton (22 yards), Omari Evans (22 yards), and Trey Wallace (14 yards). For the third time in their careers, Kaytron Allen (124) and Nick Singleton (105) both rushed for over 100 yards in the same game, with Allen also scoring a rushing TD. PSU posted 518 yards in total offense but digs itself a first half hole with four 15-yard penalties and an interception. Game Flow: Down 45-30 in the 4th, Penn State moves 75 yards for a magic, off-balance TD pass from Allar to Wallace to get back within 8, but the Lions final possession ends with an INT on a bomb from Allar to Wallace which was a tad underthrown. PSU fans wanted defensive holding or DPI called, but the breaks didn’t go Penn State’s way and the Nittany Lions lose by 8 in their second ever appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game.

  • 18th Official Full Stadium Whiteout Game since its inception in 2007: This is also the 17th full stadium regular season Whiteout, the 8th Whiteout to played in September, 2nd straight Whiteout vs. a former PAC-12 now Big Ten member (4th straight regular season WO vs. a Big Ten foe), and the 12th Whiteout played in primetime. All of the regular season Whiteout games since 2016 have been played in primetime (PSU is 7-1 in this stretch). There were no official full stadium Whiteout games in 2010 (none scheduled) or 2020 (technically played with no fans due to Covid restrictions), and two were played in 2024 including the first-ever post-season Whiteout game.

  • PSU record in Whiteout Games since 2007: PSU is 11-6 all-time in official full stadium Whiteouts (10-6 in regular season WOs). PSU is 8-3 in primetime Whiteouts (5-1 in WOs that kicked at 7:30pm ET). PSU is 4-3 in Whiteouts played in September. PSU is 1-2 vs. WO foes ranked in Top 5 and 2-1 vs. WO foes when PSU is ranked in Top 5.

  • Last Official Whiteout game: 2024 CFP 1st Round game vs. SMU (PSU 38-10 win) Noon kick on TNT. This was PSU’s first win in a Whiteout game scheduled to kick prior to 5pm ET.

  • Sidebar to Oregon game: This is the first meeting since PSU announced its 2026 switch from Nike to Adidas athletic footwear, uniforms and apparel ending a 43-year business relationship. Oregon has always been Nike’s “favorite son” while Penn State became “second fiddle” to the Ducks and others (notably Ohio State) in the post-Paterno years. Will this fuel any fan animosity moving forward? Maybe… Word from Oregon’s official X account on Sept. 21 hints at new, special “glow in the dark” white to green Nike Vaporposite cleats featuring the Mummy Duck logo. Sept. 24-Oregon reveals on X that it will wear black helmets, white jerseys with shiny silver-gray numbers and trim, and black pants with the “glow in the dark” cleats, so not even they really want to completely disappear into the sea of white at Beaver Stadium.

  • First Primetime 7:30pm ET kick for PSU in 2025 season. This is the 7th Whiteout game scheduled to kick at 7:30pm ET and 12th overall in primetime. Penn State played in primetime 6 times in the 2024 season including 3 of its 4 post-season games. Penn State played 2 primetime games at home in 2024 (wins over Illinois & Washington WO).

  • James Franklin record in night games at Beaver Stadium (2014-present)—Franklin is 14-3 at PSU under the lights for all home games that kicked after 7pm ET. Franklin is 15-3 when the Dec. 19, 2020 Illinois game that kicked off after sunset at 5:30pm EST is also considered. All three of the night game losses at home are to Ohio State (2014 in 2-OT, 2018 by 1 point, & 2020 by 13 pts.). Penn State’s record in ALL night games under Franklin is 27-8 (9-3 in away games, 3-2 in neutral site games)—One of the neutral site night losses is to Oregon and five of the 8 overall night losses are to Ohio State. FYI-”Non-home night games” are defined as those where the kickoff takes place at 5:30pm or later in the actual game location.

  • On Sept. 26, it was announced that this game would be the first of 3 PSU football games to be labeled as Venmo Big Ten Rivalry Series games along with road games at Ohio State and Michigan State. The logo for this series was painted around the existing Big 10 logos on the field at Beaver Stadium on both 25-yard lines opposite the West Shore Home Field logos which debuted here in game one. This is the first PSU season to have multiple on-field advertising logos at the stadium (Amica Insurance, which first appeared in game two and appears on both endzone aprons, is the other sponsor). NOTE: Drew Allar has a recently announced NIL deal with Venmo’s Debit Mastercard.

He was paired with Mike Patrick on ESPN. His most recent Whiteout appearance was in 2014 for the Ohio State double-overtime loss (31-24) with Brad Nessler on ABC.

  • First Whiteout Game ever on NBC-TV network—Although the 2024 Whiteout vs. Washington was streamed on NBC-owned Peacock, and NBC-TV did televise the “Unofficial Whiteout” or “Whiteout Energy” game vs. Illinois in 2024. This game will also stream on Peacock making it the second Whiteout on Peacock.

  • Fifth PSU game on NBC-TV in primetime under the current Big Ten TV contract which began in 2023. PSU is 4-0 on NBC over the past two seasons with home wins over West Virginia (2023) & Illinois (2024) and road wins vs. Michigan State in Detroit (2023) & at Wisconsin (2024). This is just the fourth game on NBC’s Big Ten Saturday Night as the 2023 Michigan State game at Ford Field in Detroit was played the Friday night after Thanksgiving. Prior to the current TV package, NBC had not televised a game from Beaver Stadium since the 1964 PSU-Navy game that featured Midshipmen Heisman Trophy winner, Roger Staubach, in his lone appearance at Penn State (a 21-8 PSU loss)—NBC aired the Navy game in “color and black & white” on a regional basis primarily in the mid-Atlantic and northeast US. NBC has aired a number of Penn State games over the years, notably bowl games beginning with the 1959 Liberty Bowl (Penn State’s first bowl victory, 7-0 over Alabama). Since 1966, when Penn State began officially tracking TV telecasts, PSU is 11-3 in games played on NBC (including a 7-1 record in Orange & Fiesta Bowls aired on NBC).

  • NBC’s Big Ten College Countdown Show is live at Beaver Stadium—Featuring former PSU QB Michael Robinson (2001-05) and fellow analyst Matt Cassel with on-site host Jordan Cornette, along with the main studio program hosted by Ahmed Fareed in New York. Show first airs at 3pm on Peacock ahead of the Indiana-Iowa game, and at 7pm on NBC & Peacock. This program debuted on NBC in 2023 with the Penn State-West Virginia primetime game and was hosted on-site outside the Bryce Jordan Center near Beaver Stadium.

  • ESPN GameDay telecast will also be live on site at Penn State’s Old Main Lawn which was announced Sept. 20th (program will air live 9am to Noon). This is GameDay’s 12th visit to PSU all-time and first without the now-retired Lee Corso (it’s the 26th overall PSU game that GameDay has officially attended and first since the 2025 Orange Bowl loss to Notre Dame). It is also GameDay’s first appearance at its typical Old Main location since the 2021 Whiteout victory vs. Auburn. GameDay’s most recent visit to PSU was for the 2024 Ohio State game where ESPN setup outside the BJC alongside the FOX Big Noon pre-game show. The current panel line-up for ESPN GameDay: Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban (Former PSU LB LaVar Arrington is scheduled to be the guest “picker” on Saturday’s show—all but Desmond picked PSU). ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show will also air live on Friday, Sept. 26 from Lasch Football Building on campus. PSU is 5-6 with GameDay on campus, and 3-2 when GameDay has been here for a Whiteout. The last win for PSU with GameDay in State College was the 2021 Whiteout vs. Auburn (PSU 28-20). GameDay’s first visit to University Park was in 1997 for the 34-8 loss to Michigan. This is the first game where both ESPN GameDay & NBC Big Ten Saturday Night’s College Countdown Show have emanated live from Penn State.

  • First Primetime Telecast in 2025 season—First Primetime TV telecast since 2025 Orange Bowl/CFP Semifinal vs. Notre Dame on ESPN (PSU 27-24 loss). • Second traditional network TV game of the 2025 season. Game One victory over Nevada aired on CBS.
