“Unofficial” Post-Season Receiving Records—
The 2020 season-ending game vs. Illinois at Beaver Stadium is “officially” considered a regular season contest although it was only scheduled the week before it was played; based on the “8-game regular season finish” of teams within their respective divisions and played on the same weekend as the Big Ten Championship Game—This was a planned part of the Covid-19 shortening of the Big Ten season to a conference-only schedule—Penn State and Rutgers were the only two teams to play a full 9-games in 2020
Jahan Dotson WR (2020 vs. Illinois)—189 yards on 6 receptions, 2 TDs (31.5 yards per catch)—TD receptions were 75 yards & 70 yards from Sean Clifford QB
Jahan Dotson WR (3 games/2 bowls—counting Illinois 2020)—239 yards on 10 receptions, 3 TDs (23.90 yards per catch)
If Dotson’s receiving stats from 2020 Illinois were “official” post-season stats, he would have the best single game in receiving yards (189) and the second longest TD catch in PSU history (75 yds.)—He would also join Chris Godwin as the only two Penn State receivers with multiple 70+ TD receptions in post-season play and the only one with 2 in the same game—Dotson’s 2 TD catches would also tie the PSU single post-season game record shared “officially” by 5 others
Nittany Notes:
Did you know that one of Penn State’s post-season passes wound up in the hands of the center for a short gain on a scoring drive?
2007 Alamo Bowl vs. Texas A&M… Game tied at 14-14 late in the 2nd quarter… The Nittany Lions have the ball 1st and 10 at their own 46-yard line… Anthony Morelli QB is looking to his left to pass, but just as he releases it, the Aggie defensive end leaps and bats the ball back at the PSU O-line… Rich Ohrnberger (left guard) gets a hand on the ball tipping it into the hands of the center, AQ Shipley… Ship holds onto the ball and pushes forward for a 4-yard gain to midfield…
Penn State would continue its 16-play drive capping it with a Kevin Kelly 25-yard field goal for the halftime lead en route to the 24-17 victory over A&M…
The Shipley “catch” was the first of two atypical completions for Penn State in a bowl game…
2023 Peach Bowl vs. Ole Miss… Late 4th quarter with PSU trailing, 38-17… it’s 1st and 10 at the PSU 30… Drew Allar’s pass is batted right back at him by a defender… Drew makes the “catch” and advances the ball for a 10-yard gain and the first down… The longest pass reception by Allar in his Nittany Lion career (and the first of his 2 career receptions off his own batted passes)… Allar keeps the drive going (4 plays, 70 yds.) and caps it with a TD pass to Trey Wallace… But, the Lions fall short, losing 38-25…
