Transfer to Virginia Tech is Official as of Jan. 14
Ethan Grunkemeyer Reportedly Entering Transfer Portal
Penn State starting Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer is reportedly entering the Transfer Portal when it opens Jan. 2 per ESPN. Grunkemeyer is a Redshirt-Freshman with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Grunk started the final 7 games of the 2025 season after the season-ending ankle injury to Drew Allar in the Homecoming loss to Northwestern. Ethan led the Nittany Lions to 4 straight victories to close the season including lone over Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl which guaranteed a 5th straight winning season (7-6) after a 3-6 start. The loss of Grunkemeyer points to the strong probability of the arrival of one or more quarterbacks via the portal including at least one from Iowa State. ISU QB Rocco Becht told ESPN he plans to visit Penn State in the next few days. ISU QBs Becht and Alex Manske have committed to PSU via the portal on Jan. 4
Grunkemeyer reportedly committed to Virginia Tech on Jan. 5 and will re-unite with James Franklin & QB Coach Danny O’Brien for the 2026 season but this was not officially announced until Jan. 14 with a post on Grunk’s X (Twitter) account.
Grunkemeyer 2025 stats (9 games with passing attempts): 1339 yards passing, 8 passing TDs, 4 INTs, with a completion pct. of 69.1% (also rushed for 1 TD)
On3 is also reporting that popular Tight End Luke Reynolds is headed for the portal, as well.—Jan. 11, Reynolds reportedly commits to Virginia Tech.
