Oct. 5 AP & Coaches Top 25 Poll Updates—PSU Falls Hard
Penn State (3-2, 0-2) falls out of the AP Poll entirely and is barely hanging on in the Coaches Poll at #22 after its stunning road loss to winless UCLA, 42-37. The Nittany Lions tumbled from #7 in the AP Poll to unranked (technically #28 among vote-getters) after it struggled on offense and defense and trailed the entire game to a team that was 0-4 and had not led at any point this season. The Bruins were also in their first game under a new offensive play-caller, Jerry Neuheisel, who dialed up a shocking 5 TD drives on PSU. In the Coaches Poll, State fell from #6 to #22 in the rankings. Per CBS Sports, this loss was only the 5th time in college football history that an 0-4 (or worse) team upset a team ranked among the Top 10—It hadn’t happened since 1985 (UTEP over #7 BYU).
Penn State had been the #2 team in the 2025 AP pre-season poll behind #1 Texas. Texas has also fallen out of the poll this week. Per the AP, this is the first time ever that both the pre-season #1 and #2 teams have dropped out of the AP football poll together in-season.
Indiana (5-0) which plays at PSU on Nov. 8 has moved up to #7 in the AP Poll & #7 in the Coaches Poll after their Bye Week. The Hoosiers visit Oregon (5-0) Oct. 11. Ohio State remains #1 in both polls. Oregon is #3 in AP and #2 in the Coaches Poll.
Next up for Penn State is its Homecoming/Stripe Out/Generations of Greatness Game vs. Northwestern (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:30pm EDT on FS1. Northwestern is coming off a 42-7 home win over Louisiana Monroe.
