Brent Pry Fired by Virginia Tech
Former Penn State Defensive Coordinator, Brent Pry, is out as head coach of Virginia Tech after an 0-3 start to the 2025 season per ESPN (and confirmed by the school). Ironically, the final nail in the coffin was delivered by an old friend, Ricky Rahne. Rahne, a former Penn State offensive coordinator, led Old Dominion to a 45-26 win over Tech on Saturday. Brent Pry has been at Virginia Tech since 2022 and his Hokie teams were 16-24 over his four seasons in Blacksburg, VA. ESPN says that he is owed a $6 million buyout. A coach’s firing triggers an automatic opening of a 30-day Transfer Portal window which could be problematic since no Hokie players have played more than four games in 2025 which would have burned their eligibility for this season.
Pry was a long-time assistant under James Franklin at both Penn State and earlier at Vanderbilt. He was Franklin’s DC or co-DC at State from 2014-2021. Former Nittany Lion middle linebacker, Jan Johnson, is one of Pry’s assistants at VT. Hokies offensive coordinator, Philip Montgomery, was named interim head coach in place of Pry.
In addition, ESPN & On3 reported (and the school confirmed) that UCLA is parting ways with head coach DeShaun Foster who has also opened 0-3 in 2025. Penn State plays UCLA at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena on October 4th (Kick Time and TV are still TBA). Tim Skipper will be the Bruins interim head coach for the rest of this season.
