Nittany Notes:
In game two of the 2022 season, Nick Singleton delivered the best ever rushing debut by a true Freshman running back at Beaver Stadium.
Singleton made his home debut on Sept. 10, 2022 vs Ohio University. Singleton lit it up in front of an announced crowd of 107,306 (the highest season opening crowd at Beaver Stadium since 2007 vs. FIU—107,678). Nick carried 10 times for 179 yards and 2 TDs (70 & 44 yards) in the 46-10 win over the Bobcats. Nick also had a run of 48 yards making him the first RB with three runs of 40 or more yards in a game since Larry Johnson had 4 in 2002 at Indiana on the day which LJ rushed for a PSU record 327 yards. The 179 yards remains Penn State’s Beaver Stadium debut rushing record.
Singleton was also PSU’s first 100+ yard rusher since Nov. 28, 2020 when Keyvone Lee racked up 134 in a win at Michigan (a drought of 17 games). Singleton left the Ohio game with 4:33 to go in the third period (just after his 44-yard TD run made it 40-7 PSU) otherwise he might have easily broken the freshman single game rushing record held by Eric McCoo (206 yards) set in 1998 vs. Michigan State.
Singleton’s debut performance at Beaver Stadium netted him the first of three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Nick was also named 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, AP Big Ten Newcomer of the Year, and an ESPN True Freshman All-American.
Some other memorable Beaver Stadium career rushing debuts by Penn State Freshman RBs (since modern Freshman eligibility began in 1972)—
Curt Warner (1979 vs. Rutgers): 12 carries for 100 yards, 2 TDs (281 all-purpose yards) in 45-10 win
JT Morris (1991 vs. Cincinnati): 13 carries for 145 yards, 2 TDs in 81-0 win
Saquon Barkley (2015 vs. Buffalo): 12 carries for 115 yards, 1 TD (and his first official “leap”) in 27-14 win
Devyn Ford (2019 vs. Idaho): 6 carries for 107 yards, 1 TD in 79-7 win
Morris & Ford transferred and completed their college careers elsewhere
