Sean Clifford to Bengals Practice Squad
Former Penn State & Green Bay Packers Quarterback Sean Clifford signed with the Cincinnati Bengals Practice Squad per ESPN (and confirmed by the team). With the long-term injury (possibly 3 months) to Bengals starter Joe Burrow, Clifford will be one of the Bengals insurance policies moving forward. Clifford joined the practice squad with another newcomer QB Mike White. The Bengals elevated existing practice squad QB Brett Rypien to the active roster alongside interim starter, Jake Browning.
Clifford was at Penn State from 2017 to 2022 and set a number of career records as the primary starting QB over his final 4 seasons (notably 86 career TD passes and 32 QB wins). Sean was selected in the 5th round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Packers. He was with them during the 2023 and 2024 seasons appearing in 3 games including the playoffs and he completed the lone pass he attempted at Minnesota in 2023. Clifford was released by the Packers on August 27th during their final roster cutdown.
Clifford, an Ohio native, joins a Bengals team with two former PSU players on the active roster—Mike Gesicki TE (2014-17) & Mitch Tinsley WR who was a teammate of Sean’s in 2022. Tinsley caught Sean’s next-to-last PSU TD pass at the 2023 Rose Bowl.
