Penn State Draft History
Through 2026 NFL Draft (dates to 1936)—45 first round picks all-time/403 total selections
First Penn State 1st Round NFL Draft Pick—Lenny Moore HB 1956 #9 overall to the Baltimore Colts
First Penn Stater taken in NFL Draft (began 1936)—Leon Gajecki C/LB in 1940 (actually Dec. 1939) by the Pittsburgh Steelers (16th round, #142 overall)-Gajecki remained at Penn State for his All-America senior season in 1940 and never played in the NFL—Note: Chuck Cherundolo C/LB (PS 1933-36) was surprisingly passed over the in 1937 NFL Draft (or he might have been Penn State’s first pick), but he would sign with the Cleveland Rams for their NFL debut season (former Nittany Lion Head Coach Hugo Bezdek coached the Rams in 1937 & part of 1938)
First Penn State 1st Round Draft Pick of the “Common NFL-AFL Draft era” (began 1967)—Ted Kwalick TE 1969 #7 overall to the San Francisco 49ers—also first 1st Rounder under Paterno
First Penn Stater taken in the “Common NFL-AFL Draft era” (1967 Draft)—Dave Rowe DT in 2nd Round #53 overall by the New Orleans Saints
First NFL Draft with 2 or more PSU 1st Rounders—2 in 1974—Ed O’Neil LB #8 to the Detroit Lions & John Cappelletti TB #11 to the LA Rams
Penn Staters who were #1 overall NFL Draft Picks (2)—Ki-Jana Carter TB 1995 to Cincinnati Bengals & Courtney Brown DE 2000 to Cleveland Browns (2000 was only year in which PSU had both the #1 & #2 overall picks with LaVar Arrington LB #2 to Washington Redskins)
First Penn Stater selected by the AFL in its Inaugural 1960 Draft (which was actually held in Nov.-Dec. 1959)—Richie Lucas QB #1 by Buffalo Bills (Lucas was technically assigned #1 to Buffalo ahead of the draft as part of a protected territorial allotment of certain top players, so he wasn’t the true overall AFL #1)—Lucas was also selected #4 overall by the Washington Redskins in the 1960 (Dec. 1959) NFL Draft but opted to sign with the AFL Bills (Lucas was PSU’s 2nd all-time NFL 1st Round pick after Lenny Moore in 1956)
Last Penn Stater drafted by the AFL prior to the Common Draft era debut in 1967—Glenn Ressler G 1965 3rd Round #17 overall by the Denver Broncos—was also last PSU player drafted by both leagues (drafted by NFL’s Baltimore Colts in 3rd Round #36 overall)
Nittany Notes:
Earl “Bud” Kohlhaas G (PSU 1957-59) might be the lone Penn Stater to have been drafted by a team that technically never existed…
In the “first phase” of the 1960 AFL Draft, Kohlhaas was selected by the unnamed Minneapolis franchise which then withdrew from the league two months later so the city and ownership group could accept an NFL franchise for the 1961 season—Minneapolis was quickly replaced by the Oakland Raiders which inherited many, but not all, of the Minneapolis draft picks (and, interestingly, would actually play its first 2 seasons in San Francisco)—Kohlhaas (who apparently never signed with Minneapolis or Oakland) was also drafted by the NFL’s Redskins a week after the AFL Draft, briefly signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL, and later signed with the AFL’s Buffalo Bills for their first summer training camp (he was reportedly released in August)—But there is no record of him playing in the regular season for any of those teams in ‘60, or ever.
Nittany Draft Day Intrigue:
In the 1995 NFL Draft which saw Ki-Jana Carter selected #1 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals, the story goes that the Carolina Panthers & GM Bill Polian might have played mind games on the Bengals to get them to trade-up to that #1 pick. Polian created a #32 Panthers jersey with Carter’s name on the back and made sure it was seen at the draft. The Panthers also leaked their “interest” in Ki-Jana to the media ahead of the draft.
Polian actually wanted PSU QB Kerry Collins for the brand new expansion franchise and felt he could be had in the top 5, so he plotted to get the Bengals (who desired Ki-Jana and thought he might not last until they selected) to trade their #5 overall pick and a second rounder to Carolina and move up into position to guarantee getting Carter. It worked. Polian got Kerry at #5 and a bonus 2nd round pick (Shawn King DE at #36), and Carter became a Bengal. Darren Rovell, a sports business reporter/analyst, has said that the Panthers still have the faux Carter jersey in their team archive.
